Face Shape Guide
& Flattering Styles
The goal isn't to hide your face shape—it's to create balance. Every face shape can wear beautiful wigs. These recommendations simply help you choose styles that naturally complement your features.
3 Approaches to determine your face shape:
Start with you in front of a mirror with hair pulled back flat away from face. Make sure you have good lighting.
1. Visually determine:
What is the widest part of your face?
- Forehead: Often indicates a Heart or Oval shape.
- Cheekbones: Points toward a Diamond or Oval shape.
- Jawline: Indicates a Square or Pear shape.
- Equal width: Indicates a Round, Square, or Oblong shape.
What is your jawline shape?
- Round & soft: Round or Oval.
- Square & angular: Square or Rectangle/Oblong.
- Pointed or narrow: Heart or Diamond.
What are your overall face proportions?
- Length and width are roughly equal: Round or Square.
- Face is noticeably longer than it is wide: Oblong, Oval, or Diamond.
2. Draw your face outline on your mirror:
- using a lipliner pencil, eyeliner pencil or eyebrow pencil that will be easy to clean off your mirror later, draw your face shape onto the mirror while standing close to the mirror.
3. Measure your face in 4 measurements:
- Step 1: Forehead width:
Measure across the widest part of your forehead (hairline to hairline).
Tip: A wider forehead often indicates a heart or oval face. - Step 2: Cheekbone width:
Measure from one cheekbone to the other, just under the eyes.
Tip: Prominent cheekbones are common in oval & diamond faces. - Step 3: Jawline width:
Start under one ear, follow the jaw to the chin. Multiply by 2 for full width.
Tip: A strong jawline is key for square & rectangular faces. - Step 4: Face length:
Measure from the center of your hairline to the tip of your chin. If your hairline is receding, estimate where it naturally begins.
Tip: If face length is greater than width, you likely have an oval or rectangular shape.
Below are the 7 Face Shapes, their descriptions, and examples of flattering styles for each.
balanced proportions, slightly narrower at the jawline than the forehead, gently curved jawline
Oval Face Shape
Flattering Wig Styles: Almost every style works! Long layers, chin-length bobs, textured shags, and center parts showcase this shape well.
Styles to Approach with Care: Heavy, full-coverage bangs that obscure the balanced symmetry or wigs with too much volume on top that may make the face appear longer.
width and length are roughly equal, with full cheeks and a rounded jawline
Round Face Shape
Flattering Wig Styles:
Styles that add vertical height and elongate the face. Long, face-framing layers, off-center or side parts, textured pixies with crown volume, and long lobs (below chin level).
Styles to Avoid: Chin-length blunt bobs and tight, rounded curls that sit right at the cheekbones.
forehead, cheekbones, and jawline are of similar width, featuring a prominent, sharp jawline
Square Face Shape
Flattering Wig Styles: Soft, organic textures that soften angular features. Soft waves, wispy curtain bangs, side-swept fringe, and layered mid-length to long wigs.
Styles to Avoid: Sharp, geometric blunt bobs or slicked-back straight styles ending right at the jaw.
wider forehead tapering down to a narrow, pointed chin
Heart Face Shape
Flattering Wig Styles: Styles that add volume around the chin and lower jaw to balance the forehead. Chin-length bobs, textured shags with side-swept bangs, soft shoulder-length layers, and side parts.
Styles to Avoid: Top-heavy styles with excessive volume at the crown, severe slicked-back tops or super short pixies that can make the chin appear sharper.
Widest at the cheekbones with a narrower forehead and chin
Diamond Face Shape
Flattering Wig Styles: Styles that add width at the forehead and jaw. Chin-length or shoulder-length bobs, side-swept bangs, face-framing layers, and soft waves.
Styles to Avoid: Excessive height at the crown or slicked-back sides that overemphasize wide cheekbones.
face length is significantly greater than width, with a straight cheekline
Long/Rectangular Face Shape
Flattering Wig Styles: Styles that add horizontal width and shorten the face visually. Medium-length cuts, layered cuts, soft full bangs or curtain bangs, curls, wide waves, and chin-to-shoulder bobs.
Styles to Avoid: Ultra-long, pin-straight styles with zero layering or high crown volume.
narrow forehead with wider jaw
Pear/Triangle Face Shape
Flattering Wig Styles: Styles that add volume at top that balances lower face.
