Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing & Fitting Your Wig

▼ How do I know what wig size I need?

You can find your size by measuring the circumference of your head using a flexible measuring tape. Wrap it around your natural hairline, just above your ears, and around the nape of your neck. Match your measurements to our Wig Size Chart. If you fall right between two sizes, we always recommend ordering the larger size, as you can easily tighten the fit using the built-in straps. See our Step-by-Step Measuring Guide.

▼ Will the wig slip or fall off? How should it feel on my head and fit me?

No, your wig will stay securely in place if it is sized correctly. Most wigs feature adjustable elastic straps inside the cap that let you tighten the fit. Remember, a wig should fit snugly, but not be uncomfortable or cause headaches. For extra security, you can use a velvet wig grip band, a silicone grip, wig clips/combs, or a small amount of skin-safe wig tape or glue along your hairline.

▼ Can I wear a wig if I have a completely bald head? If I have bio hair?

Absolutely. Wigs are designed to be worn by anyone, regardless of how much natural hair they have. If your scalp is completely bare or sensitive, we highly recommend wearing a soft bamboo cap underneath to prevent any friction and keep your scalp comfortable or you may want to look into Hand-Tied caps as they are softer. If you have bio hair, you will want to secure your hair underneath your wig. Ideas are to put your hair into a low ponytail to help secure the nape of your wig, possibly braid your hair if you have enough, wear a wig grip/cap or combo of the two. Some prefer to use their bio hair with the wig and may bring out the sides of their own hair to blend with the wig.

Choosing a Fiber Type

▼ Heat Friendly fiber vs Regular Synthetic fiber?

We have the details for you here: Synthetic Wig Fiber Guide

▼ Will my wig lose its style if it gets wet? Rained on?

No. This is a huge bonus of wearing a synthetic wig! Rain or water will not cause a wig to lose its style. Caution: hot water WILL make a wig lose its style, though.

▼ How do I make my wig look more natural?

Styling is the key. Spray your wig lightly with a mist of water. Use a wide-tooth comb or wig brush to style your wig to your preferred style. You can use hairspray (approved for synthetic wigs) or wig styling creme to help set the style.

Position your wig appropriately. Make sure you have the wig placed correctly on your forehead so that it looks natural.

If possible, you can blend your natural hair with your wig. Pull out some bio hair at the temples and in front of your ears, if possible.

Accessories, like headbands, clips, etc. will also help to make your wig look more natural and can disguise any imperfections.

Keep up with your wig maintenance. Keep it clean, conditioned and flowing like natural hair.

Choosing Style & Color

▼ Is there a color chart or color descriptions to help me decide on colors?

Yes, we have Color Charts for every brand. You can see all the colors from each brand and read the color descriptions given to us by the brands. Also, you can click to see all of the styles that come in that color, AND, you can click on the underlined color name to see the wigs that are pictured in that color to give you a really good idea of the color and color distribution on the actual wig. ▼ Should I choose the color closest to what my hair is/was?

Yes, this is the advice given to new wig wearers as it is what you are used to seeing yourself with. It can be quite a shock to look in the mirror and see yourself very differently from how you were prior to shopping for wigs. Try to match your bio hair when it was at its best as this is where you will feel most comfortable.

As you get more used to wearing wigs, you can get adventurous and try other colors, styles, etc.

▼ What is my face shape and which style should I choose for it?

Please see our Face Shape Guide that will help you determine your face shape and tells you what type of styles are flattering to each shape and shows examples too.

▼ Should I get my dream hairstyle?

Probably not at first. If you have had thinning hair for a long period of time, or no hair, all of a sudden having a drastically different style will come as quite a shock. You want to start with a wig that you know you will wear and feel comfortable in. You can definitely work up to your dream hairstyle. But most people tend to stick to what looks like their bio hair when it was at its best.

Styling & Daily Wear

▼ How do I put on my wig?

1. Prepare your hair. If you have hair, make a low ponytail to help with securing your wig in back.

2. Use a wig grip, if you prefer. A wig grip will sit just back of your hairline. Check the directions on your grip to be sure you are applying it correctly.

3. Dive in. Holding the wig at the nape, facing the inside of your wig with the nape of the wig away from you, you will "dive in" to your wig by putting your head down into it. Place the front hairline of the wig on your forehead and pull the rest of the wig down on to your head and tuck your ponytail, if you have one, just inside the nape of the wig.

4. Adjust. Check that the front hairline of the wig is sitting where your natural hairline is, or where it should be. Recommendations are to place your 4 fingers above where your eyebrows start and put the hairline of the wig touching the top finger. Make sure that both eartabs are even on each side.

5. Style. Style your wig how you like it and make it look natural.

▼ How do I maintain my wig on a daily basis?

Comb through to detangle after each wear. Carefully detangle the hair fibers by combing with a wide-tooth comb. Starting at the ends, comb down and then work up towards the roots, combing down each time. For curly wigs, you may want to detangle by using your fingers.

▼ Can I use heat tools on my synthetic wig?

For Heat-Friendly/Heat-Defiant wigs, the answer is Yes. Go by the manufacturer's guidelines for heat settings and recommended products/procedures. Just remember that after styling and warming the fibers, they must cool completely in the desired pattern to remain.

For regular synthetics, there are very few recommended heat tools that are approved to be used on them and there is a learning curve to using them effectively.

▼ Can I sleep or swim in my wig?

Sleeping in a wig can rough up the fibers, causing tangling and wear. If you must sleep in a wig, dedicate a wig to this purpose and use silk pillowcases to help prevent the friction wear. Sleeping in a silk cap if you must wear wig to bed can also be very helpful for reducing wear.

Swimming in a wig can be done. You will want to dedicate a wig to this type of wear and wash it after swimming. Make sure it is fitted to your head or find a good method to secure it.

Care & Longevity

▼ How often should I wash my wig?

There are many answers to this question! Some say a wig should be washed every 8-10 wears, and some say every 15-20 wears. If your wig is not smelling fresh, it has a buildup of product, or it is not flowing and moving like hair should, it's probably time to give it a wash. Yes, wigs can be over-washed too. This will be something that you will determine for yourself as you get more comfortable with wigs.

▼ How do I wash my wig? What kind of products should I use?

We recommend that you use products made for synthetic wigs. Please see our How to Wash a Wig Guide.

▼ How long will my wig last?

Synthetic wig lifespans vary. The care you give them and how often/long you wear them and how often you wash them make a difference. Also the type of fibers will have an impact on the lifespan too. Most manufacturers give a lifespan of 6-9 months. Some can last as long as 1 year, especially when rotating in additional wigs to wear.

▼ Why are the ends of my synthetic wig getting frizzy?

The ends get what is known as "friction frizz" from rubbing on clothing, furniture, and from our bodies warming up the fibers. The frizzy ends can be taken care of with methods tailored to each type of fiber.

Wig Life

▼ How many wigs should I own?

We recommend you have at least 2 so that if one has been washed and is drying, you have another one to wear. It depends on your lifestyle and activity and the upkeep that you perform on your wigs as to how many you should probably have. Consider if you need a wig for going out to eat, working out at the gym, wearing to work, wearing to run errands, etc. If you have wigs to wear in rotation, they all will last longer because you are spreading out the wear time on them. We know people who have hundreds of wigs; it is a personal decision.

▼ How do I store my wigs(s)?

There are lots of ways to store wigs. Some prefer to keep them in their boxes, the way they came, inside out, and can see which one it is by their box and tags. Also, wigs can be stored on mannequin heads, on special wig hangers, inside zipper bags, and we have heard of some very creative solutions also. It just depends on the amount of room you have to store them in and how you prefer to access them.

▼ Will people know I'm wearing a wig?

Not likely. Wigs have come a long, long way and are so much more realistic. A well-maintained, proper-fitting wig, especially one that resembles your natural hair when it was at its best will likely pass for your own hair. If you have bio hair to incorporate with the wig, the more realistic it will look. Cap features such as lace fronts, mono tops, and hand-tied caps bump up the realism factor and anyone would be hard-pressed to distinguish a wig from natural hair. In addition, people are not necessarily checking out your hair in everyday life. Hold your head high, feel confident, and enjoy having beautiful hair.
